Oli otya!
My name is Maret Mentink, founder of Roots of Uganda. This initiative was born from my deep love for Africa and the special bond I’ve built with Uganda. During my time working and volunteering here, I experienced the warmth, resilience, and hospitality of the people. But I also noticed something troubling: too often, tourism and volunteering mostly benefit foreigners, while local communities see little return.
My Story
That realization shaped the heart of Roots of Uganda. Everything we do is designed to directly support and empower local people.
My background at the International Hospitality School, along with many years of experience in hospitality and management across different industries, taught me the importance of genuine connection, leadership, and creating meaningful experiences. Today, those skills help me build Roots of Uganda not only as a place for unique adventures but also as a sustainable project that gives back to the community.
What moved me most in Uganda is the art of being content with what you have. Joy is found in the simple things: being together, sharing laughter, enjoying nature, or simply taking time to pause. It feels like stepping away from the world — and at the same time, coming closer to yourself.
With Roots of Uganda, I want to share this wisdom. Every service we offer is designed to bring travelers peace, connection, and discovery — while ensuring that the communities who make Uganda so special truly benefit as well.
Because only when we stand together, with respect for one another, can we create real change. And in that unity, we find our greatest strength.
